iMovie & iPads: Document learning without slowing down
G-Doc Backchannel
Brady Cline
We have all heard it said, that if you plan ahead, student portfolios needn't take up much time. In practice, however, it seems that they always do, and all too often, the results are after-the-fact reflections rather than process journals which could have made a meaningful difference in student learning and assessment.
Design thinking places a heavy emphasis on metacognition and documenting the process. iMovie on the iPad provides the perfect platform for students to create authentic process journals to document, reflect and consolidate learning. This session will explore best practices for getting the most out of your students’ video journals with minimal complication and maximum fun. Your students will thank you.

Discovery Session
In our discovery session, I'll model exactly how a teacher (me) could lead students (you) through a lesson in which students document the process as they go in order to quickly create an ePortfolio piece which includes documentation of the process not just the end product.
DEEP Dive
In our DEEP Dive, we will explore some different options for including video process journals into different subjects to aid in formative assessment, collaborative reviews, creating meaningful portfolio pieces that accurately record the real learning. It won't be particularly technical, but we will quickly look at some workflows to keep things simple and quick.

Challenges & Takeaway
- Design one or two basic sets of detailed, streamlined procedures that work within your context and are generalizable enough that you can make them part of everyday life in your classroom?
- Make your own demonstration video of the process which you can use as an example for your students before they make their own.
